What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE means you've already invested enough that compound growth alone will carry you to your retirement goal — no further contributions needed. You still work to pay today's expenses, but every dollar you would have saved for retirement is now yours to spend, give, or invest elsewhere. It's the earliest of the FIRE milestones and, for many people, a huge psychological unlock: the hardest part (front-loading your savings) is done.

How the Coast FIRE number is calculated

Two steps. First, your FIRE number — the portfolio that sustains your spending — is your annual retirement spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate (the classic 4% rule means 25× spending). Second, we discount that target back to today using your real (after-inflation) return over the years until retirement:

Coast number = (annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate) ÷ (1 + real return)years

If what you already have invested is at or above that number, you've reached Coast FIRE. Everything here is in today's money, because we use the inflation-adjusted return — so the figures stay meaningful decades out.

Coast FIRE vs Barista FIRE vs full FIRE

The numbers here are a clean estimate. Taxes, pensions, market sequence risk and your real spending path all move the target — the full FIRE Calculator models them properly.
